Hi all, my name is Sandy!! I am 2 months into my first go around with chickens!! We started off with 6 Rhode Island Reds (1 being a rooster), and about 2 weeks ago added 4 White Leghorns, 4 Barred Rocks, an Olive Egger, an Easter Egger and 2 little black chickidies that I haven't been able to identify yet!! I have fallen in love with raising chicks!! I love how each seems to have their very own DISTINCT personality!! I've never in my life had so much fun watching something else have fun.. There is something about these sweet chicks, that has touched my soul in so many ways!! All of that being said, I have a few questions for all of you (more experienced) chicken-folk!! A) One of my RIR got attacked by my father inlaws boxer, I got to her before he could do any SERIOUS damage, but she is walking on her "knee" and seems to not be able to put any weight on her "foot" at all!! Being in wildly rural Vermont, I got a lot of advice from other chicken lovers, saying that I should just seperated her & let her heal, since there was no OBVIOUS injury.. But 2 weeks later & she is still walking on her "knee".. She's eating & drinking fine, and seems to be in good spirits, but I wonder about her quality of life, since she can't prance about & play with the others, she just can't keep up and it makes me sad.. Now, onto part B).. My Olive Egger has a mass on her head.. She is about 2 weeks old and it started as little scabby bump that seemed to get a little bigger as she grew.. This morning I came out and it had ruptured!! Has anyone experienced something like this before?? I am very concerned for her, but the vets in my area seem very hesitant to work with them because they are laying hens and said that there is very little they can do for laying hens.. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! *Sandy

Please post in full detail at "emergencies, diseases, injuries, cures," thread. Do you think the hen has a broken foot (ala boxer).? Does she seem in pain if you examine her foot? If so after this length of time, it probably cannot be repaired.

You may want to start a second post at ER about your chick with the ruptured lump. It may be a cyst or the other hens may have been pecking at it and made it worse.
All of this would be greatly helped with photos. It's pretty difficult to diagnose birds you can't see or examine. It comes down to "best guess," which may not be enough.

Some folks even post videos to show how the bird limps etc.
