I have had the pleasure of getting to know my neighbor and her chickens over the last few years and have enjoyed numerous eggs and chicken stories since they've moved in. They are relocating across the country and asked if I was interested in taking on some of their flock. I enthusiastically agreed and spent the last two months researching as much as possible. I have about two weeks until they move in. My coop is almost ready (needs paint), and I have some more chicken playground things to put together and need to finish the run, but their basic coop is together. (picture!)
Bwakingham Palace will have a 6 Ladies moving in by the end of the month. They are seasoned layers and are about 1-3 years, mix of Americaunas, Rhode Island Reds and Orpingtons. They are somewhat familiar with me, and though still skittish, I've been able to feed two of them from my hand. I'm excited to take on this new responsibility and provide a safe and healthy environment for some feathered family. Having regular access to farm fresh eggs, compost material and natural pest control are all great bonuses too. I live in Central Florida and am glad to not have to deal with an HOA. Our coop is converted from a child's playhouse that had a super well constructed frame. We had to replace some siding and add coop specific features, like hardware cloth, additional ventilation, perches, and nesting boxes. Now I get to pick out paint, add some chicken swings and help the hens move in.
