Hello!

My husband and I are the proud parents of 5 chickens. They are about 7 weeks old.

I have a questions about winter and chickens. We live in Central CT. Do the chickens just run around outside in the snow? (they have a nice run- so I mean in the run). Do you shovel the run? Or do they just run around on the snow?

I kind of envision putting tarps around the run in the bad weather, just to give them some extra protection from the wind and any rain or snow.

The coop we are getting is a bit on the smaller side, so I want to be sure they have enough space and freedom.

I was also considering building a coop that could go inside the garage-

I'm a worrier, so any reassurance would be greatly appreciated!

(we have 2 Americuanas, a RI Red, a Barred Rock, and a Gold Sex Link)

Thank you so much!!!

You may want to rethink the coop in the garage set-up. Coops create a lot of dust and inside a garage will not provide good air movement. Blowing snow creates snow drifts everywhere so shoveling the run would be good. I also shovel paths so the birds can move around a bit outside the run.
