I have wanted chickens for a very long time. But have never had the space.. Now I have the space and it just so happens I know someone who has to decrease flock size asap. I am getting 7 ameraucana laying hens this weekend. 1 year old roughly. Feeding and water seems self explanatory.. Been doing research online. I am going to eventually build a coop with only a weeks notice my options are limited though. So I am looking for advice for a CHEAP and quick temporary set up. Thanks in advance look forward to any help !

Do you have a storage shed you could trick out, or empty stall, or part of a barn/garage? Very large dog houses would be good in a pinch but, they wouldn't all fit in one.

Have your tried you local Craig's list, seems like someone is always dumping a coop, sometimes with birds included. Another thought - some furniture/ large appliance stores, etc. have big wooden packing crates they throw out.- usually behind the store.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! drumstick diva gave you some good suggestions. A tarp for the roof, and you might consider getting some wire that you will re-use later in the coop to make a temporary setup, also check into hoop coops if you have access to fence panels (or can borrow a dog run).

Glad you joined us! I hope you find a good coop.

I am going to turn a corner of the garage into a coop... Anything I should stay away from? Getting 7 birds going to use 5g bucket rack system for nest boxes going to have 6 of them how high off the ground should roosting 2x4 be? And where at in relation to nesting boxes??
