Hi all, I grew up on a farm in WI. My parents kept a fairly large flock and sold eggs. Other than gathering eggs, I had little to do with our chickens, which were mostly Leghorns.
My family and I now own a small 10 acre farm in NC now and decided to raise chickens for fun and farm fresh eggs.
I bought 14 chicks from our local Tractor Supply. 3 Leghorns, 5 Buff Orphingtons, 3 Golden Comets, and 3 Brown Isa. They all survived and are thriving. At 3 months they are really starting to work the property. I’ve not seen a tick on me in at least a month and before that we had many. Our two dogs and cat love the chickens, quite often we lay out in the grass and the chickens will join us for a picnic or to be loved on.
It turns out the Buffs are my favorite, one in particular will run to greet me whenever she sees me!
Husband and I converted a large old doghouse into a chicken coop, but now we’re looking at plans to build something larger with laying boxes and places to roost. We cannot wait to start collecting our own farm fresh eggs in a few months!
