Hi All,

My name is Delane and I have a teeny-tiny farm. :) I've been stalking the forum for awhile, getting ideas/information, but I decided it was time for me to join, as I'm having more and more questions and comments.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am new to chickens! My husband wanted them (his parents had them when he was a child)... I was not so excited. Now... you can't keep me out of the coop! I absolutely LOVE them!!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
First we bought six chicks from TSC, they were simply labeled as "Pullets" and I still don't know what they are. All six survived, so we have six, 3-month old, mystery, red chickens.

Then, at our local feed store about a month ago, I found "Blue Australorps." I am in love, I bought two and (with my limited chicken knowledge) I believe one is a hen and one is a rooster.

(3) What breeds do you have?
Mystery red Chickens - Tolerant of my presence, but not friendly... love fresh veggies (don't love me so much) :p
Blue Australorps - Very friendly... love attention - will jump onto your lap if you sit in their enclosure.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Looking for Chicken advice online, this site always seemed to have multiple answers to my endless questions!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
My other main hobbies are my horses, endless work, but also endless fun and entertainment. :)

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Family:
Oh Gee...
1 annoying - but loveable husband. :)
1 Labrador - also annoying but loveable.
3 horses - The loves of my life.
1 donkey - :) always my friend
3 cats - all rescues (imagine that)
and now 8 chickens!!

Your mystery chickens are probably Red Sex Links and you'll get a lot of eggs from them.

The Blue Australorps will provide a lot of eggs, too; and, yes, they are more friendlier.

I have Black Australorps and they are very sweet natured.

Husband is annoying because he talks back. ;) Donkey.... Well maybe he is a little annoying sometimes. :) I see you are a fellow Texan... How are your chickens handling this weather? My girls spend a lot of time in the shade, and they are panting, but I'm trying to keep them cool, we are installing a fan in their coop this weekend. :)

Howdy! My girls are usually in the shade. I let them free range. They get upset with me if I don't let them out in the morning. I, too, am trying to convince my husband (who can be annoying also)

to put a fan in the coop. He thinks they will be able to handle the heat just fine. I think he should 'sit' in the coop and try laying an egg with no breeze blowing!!

I put frozen water bottles in their water and boy do they love that. I just read on here that some are putting frozen water bottles right in the nest.

I don't know if I can handle that!!!

What kind of a fan are you putting in? I have been looking at them, but not sure what would be economical, good, etc. etc. . (now I am thinking like my engineering husband).

Have a great, hopefully cooler, day!!

Lisa :)
