Hi everyone. I am new to chickens and have one I can't figure out. I have 4 Rhode Island reds, one barred rock and one Catalina. (I think). The Catalina I can't figure out if it's a hen or a rooster. I have one Rhode Island Red rooster and not sure about the Catalina. If anyone can help me identify this as a rooster or hen I would appreciate it.

Catalina? I am not familiar with that breed. I have heard of a catalina baked chicken recipe though. However, not knowing what type of chicken that is, I am not seeing anything that is screaming rooster to me. Hence, I am thinking you have a pullet there.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I've been raising chickens for 50 years, and the only Catalina chicken I've heard of is a chicken dish in which Catalina dressing forms the main basis of the seasoning.) If the bird you are asking about is the chestnut red bird in the center, it looks like a New Hampshire to me, and if it is at least 14 weeks old, it's a pullet not too far off from laying. If it's younger than that, it's a cockerel with a comb and wattles that large and red. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

The Catalina is the lighter one and they are approximately 5 months young. I am thinking its a hen by its build but I can't find any good pictures of the Catalina hen online. The beard is throwing me off.

The problem is that the bird in the above link has white earlobes, whereas your bird has red earlobes. So your bird is obviously a different breed from the breed in NorthFlChick's link.
Good catch Michael. That was as close as I could come, guess it will continue to be a mystery.
