I have been doing all of my research here during brooding, but now I have an issue and need answers. I have a chick that started out with a scissor beak, but now it seems that her bottom beak has stopped growing and the top is overgrown. Now to top it off, she has this lump under her beak. She has been keeping up with the others in size, but I'm noticing now that she is slowly falling behind. She is 4 weeks old now. Is there any hope for this baby?

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Oh I am so sorry about your baby! I am not sure what can be done about these things. If you have an avian vet nearby that knows something about how to deal with this, you might take her in for a look see. Definitely don't do any beak trimming until you know more about this. There are blood veins in beaks and trimming can be painful if not done right.

For now, you might stop by this thread on crossbeaks. There are members here that have birds with cross beaks and have learned how to care for them...https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...-for-special-needs-chickens-and-their-keepers

Good luck with this and I hope your baby can over come this issue!!

I'm no vet just guessing so please don't think what I say is written in stone. I think the lump (tumor) may be pushing her lower beak out of line and affecting development. I would have no idea if the tumor is benign or not. A vet would have to see it. If was benign there is a chance it could be removed and not grow back. Probably surgery on such a young chick would be too much for her. Have you posted her photos at "emergencies, diseases, injuries, cures," thread I'm sure the people there know much more than I do.
