Hello my name is Sarah, my husband and I just got 6 production reds that are 8 weeks old! Iv'e never had chickens before so I have a lot to learn =) So far we love them they are so sweet. My only concern is that one bird has almost no tail feathers left, ( he was a little sparse when we picked him up) are the other chickens picking on him? or could it be something else?

Hi Sarah, welcome to BYC!

If you haven't been there yet, check out the Learning Center for tons of useful information:

Your little guy may be getting picked on. If you can identify the one doing the pecking, move her away from the others for a couple of days to see if that breaks her overbearing activities.

Good luck to you

Nice to meet you Sarah. Poor guy, there is always one the others decide to harass. If I were a chicken, I'd be that one. At least they didn't pull my hair out at school.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X3, see if you can figure out which chick is doing the feather plucking, if it doesn't look like anyone is, the chick could just be really slow growing in tail feathers, or could be doing a chick molt.

Hi! Ya I agree with everyone else. Find the picker (if any) and separate it from the others. Everyone is great here and you'll have a great time!

Welcome to BYC, Sarah! (That's my name too!

) Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Sorry about your little bird. Sometimes others just enjoy pecking on a certain one. Is he/she bleeding? If so, remove her until the bleeding stops as this will only encourage more pecking. And then make sure they have lots of things to keep them busy. Bedding to dig in, mirrors, little ladders and lots of room to play are all great ways to distract them.
