I started with 6, too. Actually, I started with 7, because I figured I'd lose one or two based on the stories I read here.
Nope. Turned out I was a pretty good dad.
Don't overthink it too much. I actually bought my first peeps through a great feed store here. I ended up with a great mixed flock of personable birds. In fact, I would suggest general personality type as a main focus on the starter flock.
I had 2 Buff Orpingtons and 2 Light Brahmas in that first mix. They were like puppies.
I had 2 Danish Brown Leghorns, which were pretty and laid prolifically, but were incredibly flighty and stand-offish.
