Hello I am new to NC. I have started a large garden and I am looking to get into chickens but don’t know if I am allowed to where I am located. I looked up the town codes and it states that I can have 5 chickens but it looks like I need to have the coop 100ft from any inhabited building. Is that from home as well or just neighboring homes? How can I get clarity on what I can and can’t do? Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to BYC!!

I called my locate township to ask for some clarification of a coop. The township codes said I needed a permit for a building that costs over $500 and permanent. I needed to know if the $500 was materials it cost to make or what I would sell it for and if it isn't permanent but moveable do I need a permit. He said the $500 is up for my interpretation and that if it is permanent I would need a permit. Well... it isn't permanent, it can be moved... with a forklift :D I would call your local township or talk to a nearby chicken owner.

Hello, Marc, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
You've looked up the codes. There must be a number there to call. Call and ask for clarification but I'm willing to bet it's 100 ft from ALL inhabited structures including your own.

Welcome to BYC from Arizona! This is the place to be for all your chicken news, connections to helpful poultry folks and more!
I hope you find a way to meet the local ordinance and any HOA covenants and restrictions if there are any.

Also picking a quieter non-flighty breed that bears confinement well will cut down on a lot of potential complaints. I know some in my city that have house chickens or garage chickens. Look at your state's www.backyardchickens.com/forums/where-am-i-where-are-you.26/ thread to see if anyone is nearby you has creative ideas in similar situation.
