New to Chickens

Welcome!
The best way to avoid diseases is to prevent them and the number one way to prevent them is to get all of your birds as chicks from a major disease-free hatchery.

People sell sick birds all day long on craigslist and Facebook.

I'm in the Houston area and I only order chicks from ideal Poultry.
I have never had a disease in my flock.

Thank you Kiki for your response. I ordered my chicks from Meyer’s Hatchery. Hopefully there won’t be any problems, but still want to be prepared just in case. Have raised dogs all my life but raising chickens is all new to me since I have never raised them before.

Welcome to BYC and best of luck with your first flock! You are getting a good start in disease prevention by ordering from a hatchery. One of the most common disease to watch out for in chicks is coccidiosis, which is treatable but must be caught quickly, so you might consider having Corid (amprolium) on hand. Also check whether or not your chicks are vaccinated for coccidiosis before deciding on medicated vs. non-medicated feed.

Many diseases can come from wild birds and other things in the environment, so it's not always possible to prevent, but by taking time to observe your chickens each day, you'll know something is wrong quickly and have the best chance of a good outcome.

Meyer's is just great too.
You should be able to keep diseases away from your flock as long as you don't ever introduce new birds and if you do introduce new birds I highly recommend only introducing chicks from a major hatchery.

Thank you. I am actually getting ready to order Corid.
