Hello everyone, my name is Jacinta and I know very little about chickens. My mother had a small group when I was younger but the only things I remember is all the different feeds she bought so they would lay good eggs and that she had an evil rooster whose only joy in life was his hens and trying to kill any person who came into his yard. ohh and they never stayed in their yard.
I am a stay at home mom of a 9 year old daughter whom I also homeschool. We own and show arabian horses and American shetland ponies. We live on a 60 acre farm with several dogs and cats 4 arabians and 2 ponies in southeast Iowa.
How did I get into chickens you ask.... well I have not yet. Our homeschool group has an incubator that we can use and silly me said I thought it sounded like fun. So in the next week or two we will get our turn to use it, the eggs are just eggs, not sure of the breed of chicken or color. I thought once they hatch it would be fun to keep a few, I mean a farm isnt complete with out a few chickens running around right LOL
We (meaning my husband) need to build a a small coop to keep them safe. We do have coyotes, fox, racoons, and I have seen a mink on occasion. So it will have to be critter proof, if at all possible. I do know our neighbor across the road had just bought some young pullets to replace his old hens and the coons ripped a hole in his coop killing most of them.
so any ideas/suggestions would be wonderful.
