Hello, from Minneapolis and fulfilling a multi year long dream to have chickens. I did raise a few pheasant chicks several years back that did just fine to maturity.

On Day 4 of having four Black Orpington (must be 4 for four!) older chicks acquired at about 8 weeks old. I would appreciate any advice. I have not built their coop yet, doing nicely right now with a LARGE dog crate and a pre-constructed run. I am just drooling over coop plans on this site and eager to get out the saw and drills, though. I am a girl but do like to build stuff. Help me get through the first few days!

Acquired the older girls* since they should be laying that much sooner, and I think Orpingtons are beautiful.
Jumped in with two feet first!

*sure hope they are girls, the owner said he was giving me only pullets.

You know, you could try posting pics of your (hopefully) girls on the breed and gender forum and see if an old timer can help you be sure.

Nice to see UP'er here! Might need some tips from the northern chix keepers as weather turns cooler. I will take photos of the pullets soon. Kind of a dark and rainy morning here, so not ideal at present. The rain is much appreciated and needed!
 
I too am new to the chicken scene after leaving my litigation paralegal job after 13 years--needed a new hobby. ha ha anyway, husband very supportive of my chicken quest. Just finished putting a sealer on my new chicken coop and starting to research breeds. Although I would like to have layers and meat chickens, i understand it's bad to house them together?? THinking of having a 2nd coop later on for the meat and just starting small with 6 hens. Would love a rooster as well. My first concern is how to keep them warm during our Ohio winters if I don't have electricity. Also, if I start with 4 chicks and want to add a few more later on, can you put chickens in the same pen as larger hens, and if not, what are the options and at what point can you put them in with larger hens? Thanks for any information and insigh.
