I'm Jen and I live in Urbana, IL. I have four 11 week old hens. I got my hens from mypetchicken.com. I have two white leghorns, a Rhode Island Red and a mystery maran that was in the maran collection. I got into raising chickens because I wanted to start a hobby with my 2 year old. I kinda also wanted to piss off the neighbors that live on the left side of me. If we could have roosters in the city I would have gotten 4 roo's lol. Anyway, I figured maybe if we got good enough at it she could show them at the fair and if not, we would always have eggs. So far it has been ok. I am the worst builder ever but I did manage to build a decent brooder. I purchased a coop off of eBay, and my dad bought one off of craigslist, the ebay purchase was an utter failure. It's cheap and plastic and I'm pretty sure my girls will freeze to death in it this winter. The Craigslist purchase is not really a good fit for me. It is 2X6. There is no real way for me to clean it. It's solid wood, just looks like a pain to deal with cleaning wise. So for now I have them in my brooder (it is huge for four hens) in my garage until spring. I'll probably bring my flimsy coop in my garage and let them get in it so they have more space.
I happened to stumble across BYC in April, while researching. I have enjoyed looking at the beautiful coops. Now BYC is in my top 10 sites.
