Hi Everyone
my name is Ashley and my fiance and I just got our first batch of ducklings! They are from Metzer Farms and they are now 8 days old. We did weeks of research to get ready for them, but I feel like I can never be prepared enough. There are still SO many questions and concerns that pop up every day. We did lose one duckling the day before yesterday and I still can't figure out why. I was so heartbroken, but I am determined to make sure the remaining 5 have the best care possible.
I figured I'd just use the template
(1) Are you new to ducks / when did you first get ducks?
My family always had chickens growing up, and they have a few now as well. I am a duck lover though, so currently, my fiance and I just have ducks.
(2) How many do you have right now?
We have 5 ducks right now. They are 8 days old.
(3) What breeds do you have?
1 female black runner, 1 female fawn/white runner, 1 female khaki campbell, 1 female cayuga and 1 male blue runner.
We also had and lost a little female chocolate runner on day 5 (RIP sweet girl)
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard ducks?
I honestly just love them as an animal--they're so cute. The eggs will be nice as well (we love baking). We have a very large yard/garden for them to run around in, and I know it will be a lot of fun to watch all of their shenanigans.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Anything "outdoorsy." We love hiking and camping and taking care of all of our outside critters. I won't lie, there is a TV show binge in there every once in awhile though.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We live in North Eastern Arizona and we have horses, goats, donkeys, cats, and dogs. My fiance is a firefighter, and I am currently working in real estate development.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found BYC by doing google searches a few months ago when we were thinking about adding ducks to our family. Until today, I have just been looking up past posts to find the best info I could. I finally decided to join, because why not just ask my own gosh dang question!? Plus, everyone on here seems so kind and non-judgemental vs. what I see in a lot of Facebook groups.
I just wanted to say hi and thank you for being so kind to the "newbies"
I hope everyone is having a wonderful day!
