New to Ducks

:welcome Welcome to BYC! :frow

I, personally, have had significant success with housing hens separately from drakes/roos too.
Without the females there for them to spar for mating rights to, their aggression does stifle significantly. It all depends on the individual bird, though. :idunno

Here's hoping that you find our fantastic community to be overflowing with all the poultry info you could ever be in need of- and maybe you'll make a few lasting acquaintances along the way. :D

Thank you for the input! That gives me some hope!

I’m looking forward to this community! I’ll lots more questions along the way!

I have 3 drakes, 4 hens right now. The only time my boys "fight" is when they're in the pool and the ladies are nearby ;-) It's just mostly someone trying to climb on the back of someone else until someone jumps out, leaving the winner in the pool.. Putting on that show for mating rights! lol
No, it would do no harm to the drakes to separate them and house them apart from your ducks, especially while they mature and settle into their new flock situation. I think at 5 months you can tell who is a drake and who isn't... head color and tail feathers (boys have the curly ones). Note- I was panicked when I came to realize the 3 I got turned out to be boys, as I was worried the drake/duck ratio, but luckily all is well as my girls are Welsh Harlequin and similar in size to 2 of my drakes, who are Blue Swedish. My other drake is a Khaki Campbell, and he's smart and mostly avoids any scuffles since he's the smallest.... So that may be something to consider once you realize which ones are males and which are females... if the Khaki's are the females, they'll be smaller than the Rouens, by enough to consider that a factor, I think.
