Hello! We are getting our very first ducks as soon as they start quacking hopefully next week, were getting 2 Indian runners... Do you think they are likely to lay in the autumn? Xxx

Hi and Welcome to BYC.. how old are they? most ducks begin to lay around 5 months old there are exceptions though some can start as early as 4 and then most of my Muscovy's are 7-9 months before they lay.

They will be 7-8 weeks old, we're just waiting on them being sexed (I'm not confidant enough with the mating thing yet) give me a year or two xxx

I'm thinking next spring. But they may surprise you and lay by late fall depending on where you live. Runners are great egg layers.

Of course! We're very excited! Pen building this weekend.. Nail biting stuff! Will double chicken wire help prevent a predator getting into the pen? We only really have foxes to worry about here but still they are a worry! Xxx

They will definitely be laying by the fall, add some supplemental light if needed and they will lay all winter long depending on their molt cycle.
