It's pretty cheap and short but is packed with information! I love it! It's also really funny! Don't read the section about preparing them to be eaten. I skipped it and advise you do the same.

BackYardChickens also has a lot of info too but it's best feature is it's big, big, way big forum. A lot of people are online all the time and you can get help with anything you need even if your problem isn't about chickens! There's people on here that are doctors, programmers, architects, linguists, teachers, technicians, farmers, students, etc. People of all different cultures and backgrounds get on this site because of what they love brings them together. Chickens are simply amazing.

Thanks for all the replies. Boy this is an active forum. Who'd've thunk that many people were raising chickens in their back yard.

I ordered the book "Chickens in Your Backyard: A Beginner's Guide" by Rick Luttmann. It should be here later in the week.

I also just moved the dog house that I was hoping to turn into a coop but realize it's not in very good shape. So I'm planning again from square one which may end up being easier in the long run.
 
Reading about your new endeavour makes me excited all over again for getting mine. I of course got the chicks first, built the coop and learned about them later! A much harder way to do things. You will love them....lots of fun!! Good luck!
