Hi - I’m new to the forum though I’ve read various posts over the years our municipality still hasn’t allowed chickens but mentioned a nothing about quail so we are starting them because of the egg prices and ability to keep them indoors / in the garage and smaller space requirements. My husband and I are located in a smaller city in south central MN.

We are empty nesters ourselves and I’ve always wanted a hobby farm but I don’t know if that will ever happen at this point. I would love to at least have a semi rural property to actually have some smaller livestock including chickens. I don’t know how much I could do anymore since I’ve been wrestling with spinal arthritis for years (two neck surgeries and constant PT and OT and interventional pain modalities precludes a lot of those things for me.) Husband is a huge help and supports my animal stuff even though he himself isn’t really an animal person.

We have three grown kids, three wild and crazy grandsons, currently two hyper Airedales (well, one is 10.5 and finally slowing down the last couple years) and two male finches - a shafttail and a Gouldian.

We picked up jumbo coturnix eggs this weekend from a local breeder, and set them in the incubator a day later which was yesterday. They’re in a Kebonnixs 12 egg incubator and we covered the center water compartment with plastic canvas and will put down a mat at lockdown also - we have a 3d printed quail egg insert coming tomorrow from an Etsy seller so will have to quickly install that so they turn more effectively.

One thing I wondered about these rotating turners is why they all rotate in the same direction every time. I have never seen them go the opposite direction and I thought that was one of the things that you’re supposed to do to avoid twisting up the chalazae?

I did hatch one afghan pheasant ages ago when the kids were small and I think it was in a top hatch incubator, but I think the whole batch got addled in shipment that time hence the bad hatch rate.

Pics of my pups and birds and the eggs we got.
