Hello I’m a new soon to be goose owner!!

I have spent the past two months researching geese to the point where it is driving my family crazy…and I could not be prouder of that fact. I have been learning everything I can about geese in advance of the purchase of “my” geese. As adults they will have about ¼ of an acre to roam all by themselves, with a lovely goose shed (a 4x4 orange and green striped “Jailbird” pen) and plenty of access to fresh water. However my dilemma hits now, I plan on making my purchase be it day old goslings or fertilized eggs (I have an incubator) next week. I am still at a loss as to which breed I would like to own, I adore the Tufted Romans, Tufted Buffs, Embden, and American Blues + Lavender Ice’s. I have no clue which breed to go with.

I really want a “friendly” breed that would be a good back yard bird and if I could show it that would be a great bonus but not a requirement. Any and all suggestions would be welcome and incredibly helpful.

Roman Tufted are small, tend to be quiet and are just awesome! I've heard great things about Buffs too. My neighbors have Embdens and they are sweet to her but their immediate neighbors complain because they are pretty loud.

I really commend you for all the research you're doing. No matter what you decide - I know you'll love them. Your set up sounds nice too! Let us know what what you decide. If it were me I'd go with the day old goslings.

My Hubby was wary of geese but 2 years ago he order Toulouse. They are more plain barnyard geese I guess.Big Fat babie's lol. They did very well for us and of course I hand tamed them as babie's.But We did get nibbled a couple times when they started laying egg's and nesting so that is expected with any geese.I don't know about other breed's personaly.I had a friend that had some white chinese but think they were all Ganders and would attack everyone and his mother made him take them away.I guess it depend's on how they old they are and the breed.Im looking to get some Seb's my self this year.I miss my Toulouse they were good birds

Thanks Everyone, it was just what I needed! The Tufted Roman it is!! So, I am going to buy a pair of TR but I am thinking about bying a single goose of another breed, so there are 3 in the shipping box. Any suggestions on that idea and/or breed suggestion?

Oh and when they come I will flood you with pictures, I am a budding photographer and the geese will be my new canvas.

Are you thinking of another female goose? If so why not another Tufted Roman female? They do quite well as a trio. Sure the Gander will have a favorite mate but he can usually keep 2 females happy if the dominate female allows him to. Don't be suprized if a female turns out to be the BOSS of your mini-gaggle, that was the one thing that kept the Tufted Roman from being my favorite breed, the ganders were such Wimps!

See the issue with that is I am buying from Metzer Farms, and they only sell pairs or straight run. So I am going for a pair of TR's and a Run of another breed. I know that if I bought a TR strait run and it turned out male I would have to buy him some girls. Hehe.
