Welcome to BYC. I am so sorry for your loss.
We bought our original hens and rooster when they were adults. I managed to make friends with them by sitting on the ground in the chicken yard. I'd just read quietly, and scatter treats (mealworms, raisins, blueberries) around me. Eventually they got closer and closer until they were in my lap.
