Hello! I'm new to BYC, and just looking for a little bit of help. I am adding the chicken coop to my already fenced in garden, but all it has on the bottom is weeds and dirt. Do I put some sort of wood or fabric or something down, and then the bedding on top of that? PLEASE any suggestions would be great!! I am also looking for a great website to order my chicks from. I need somewhere where I can order just a few to start, since my family and I are all new to this whole chicken thing!

Have you considered getting them locally? The feed stores get their chicks from the hatcheries, but you can choose just a couple. Otherwise there are usually breeders in your area. You can find them by doing a google search or sometimes by looking on craigslist.

Thank you for your help! The city doesn't have many options to buy them locally. We do have a Tractor Supply up the street in Michigan, but wasn't sure on the quality of chickens. I have young kids, so was hoping to get them young so they grow to be comfortable with them.

I'd check local craigslist ads before buying from TSC...

Yeah, I didn't hear good things about getting your chicks from Tractor Supply. Is that a silky in your picture? That would be my ideal chicken, but haven't found where I can order them in smaller amounts.

i just got mine in today from www.chickensforbackyards.com , and they only have a 3 chick minimum, may be an option for you if you aren't able to source some locally

Awesome! Thanks for the info! I will look into it! Were you happy with your chicks?
