My Coop
My Coop
Hi everybody :frow

I have an enclosed garden in my backyard that I'm thinking of converting to a quail aviary so we can raise some coturnix for meat and eggs. It's a big structure, 12' x 16' so there will be plenty of room.

We want to breed but I'm a little confused about how many males can be together. For this big of a space, should we have separate areas for each male and their hens, or can they safely live together? I've read males raised together might be ok, but that won't always be the case.

Thanks!

I'm planning to start with about 10 this fall and add again in spring. I think maybe 20 max on hand at any given time unless we are rotating stock. For fertility, 3 or 4 males and the rest female. Will have a separate area for brooding out there.

You are about spot on with your conclusion, from what I've read. Several males 'might be ok, but that won't always be the case'. You risk injuries if you try it, but they might be perfectly fine.

I have 13 unknown sex 2.5 week olds right now.

I will let you know once I figure out who is who and how they behave as soon as I figure it out.

I am thinking I might get away with keeping only two males...it really just depends. Waiting game to watch and see.

Thank you, and for breeding it would be best to know who came from who, that was dumb :lau

New project, I over think. Thanks for your replies.
