Hi, I’m very excited to introduce chickens into our family. We are planning on buying chicks from a local hatchery near us. They are $12 each for Orpingtons and Astrolorps and they come vaccinated, is this a good deal? We also thought about buying from an online hatchery because we’re interested in 1 silkie! We’re planning to start with 3 chicks. Any advice on best places you gotten chicks? And best advice on silkie chickens?

Welcome to BYC.
What hatchery are you buying from? Are they newly hatched chicks? Are they unusual colors? What is their policy on mistakes in gender?
All of that will influence the price of chickens.
I have bought from Ideal poultry and been very satisfied. I have chicks from Tractor Supply that are from unknown hatcheries. I'm not a breeder so I'm not concerned about their being perfect specimens.

Hello, and welcome! Good luck with your plan's! I have heard that since silkies have the soft skull under all of that poof, that if they get pecked in the head by the bigger bird's that it can kill them. If you want a silky, I think that it would be best to get 2 or 3 of those, and keep them separate from the standard sized bird's that you want.
