I'll probably be the oldest 'new to raising chickens' at 67
My husband and I live in the country, and I've done animal rescue for well over 40 years. I was in the few that chose Home Schooling for my girls back in the 80's - one thing I learned is you are never too old to learn new things. We are currently working on securing our barn so we can have a safe place for the chickens I plan on breeding. When we're done building the 3 coops - and play area inside the barn, we will then begin working on securing the outdoor run. I have spent the past few months reading every book, and scouring the internet for as much information as I can find on raising them to be healthy without vaccines. There is a reason - my youngest has developed some serious health issues in her adult years eating 'regular food' that I didn't grow organically in our garden - yes I also have a large vegetable garden, an herb garden, a small orchard, and a mealworm farm. I am starting with Jubilee Orpingtons from the Cackle Hatchery in June - so I still have some time to prepare my 'medicine cabinet' for the chickens. I'm hoping to expand with the Jubilee first, then perhaps expand to other Orpingtons. Being 'older' I really prefer the more docile birds and I'd love to be able to pass this breeding program on to my daughter someday - it's something she is also very excited about.
