I'll probably be the oldest 'new to raising chickens' at 67 :) My husband and I live in the country, and I've done animal rescue for well over 40 years. I was in the few that chose Home Schooling for my girls back in the 80's - one thing I learned is you are never too old to learn new things. We are currently working on securing our barn so we can have a safe place for the chickens I plan on breeding. When we're done building the 3 coops - and play area inside the barn, we will then begin working on securing the outdoor run. I have spent the past few months reading every book, and scouring the internet for as much information as I can find on raising them to be healthy without vaccines. There is a reason - my youngest has developed some serious health issues in her adult years eating 'regular food' that I didn't grow organically in our garden - yes I also have a large vegetable garden, an herb garden, a small orchard, and a mealworm farm. I am starting with Jubilee Orpingtons from the Cackle Hatchery in June - so I still have some time to prepare my 'medicine cabinet' for the chickens. I'm hoping to expand with the Jubilee first, then perhaps expand to other Orpingtons. Being 'older' I really prefer the more docile birds and I'd love to be able to pass this breeding program on to my daughter someday - it's something she is also very excited about.

Welcome to BYC!!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

Lots of us oldsters around these forums keeping poultry, you are certainly not the oldest but you do have plenty of company! :D

I am sorry your daughter has issues with food, I do as well and have to be very careful what I eat to prevent reactions. It's nice to know where your food comes from and how well it was raised.

Make yourself at home here and welcome to our community!

Welcome to the coop! I use the Forums and Articles tabs at the top of the page to do research. You can get lost for hours. It's nice to know you are minutes away from getting help with questions and emergencies! I always check in the "What's New" section as well at the top of this page. This way I can read how I may have a similar question or help give some advice.
