Hello all.

I have been browsing this web site for well over a year now as I considered raising chickens in my urban backyard and have learned an awful lot from the forums and learning center. I figured it was time to join so I could ask questions that I have a hard time finding clear answers to by searching by topic. I look forward to learning from all of you.

I purchased chicks back in the spring and raised them in my homemade brooder with plenty of help gleaned from this group. I then built my coop and enclosed run and have been having a lot of fun watching my fuzzballs grow into hens. But I do have some questions.

When I went to buy my chicks, I had decided on Buff Orpingtons and Barred Rocks, but the feed store that I prefer to do business with did not have those breeds. The lady convinced me that Gold Sex-Links and a breed she called "Barred Leghorns" were just as good. I took her word for it and off I went with my little box of fluff.

So, my first question is: are Gold Sex-Links and Gold Comets the same thing? I have read that they are and that they aren't. I have also seen that people with the Gold Comets rave about the size of their eggs. Mine just started laying a few days ago, and they are very small eggs. Same with the "Barred Leghorns." Their first eggs were quite small. Is this normal?

My second question is: has anyone heard of a Barred Leghorn or did I get sold a raft of chicken poo? I would tend to believe they have some Leghorn in them as they are very flighty even after daily handling by me since they were chicks.

Thank you.

! Great to have you here. For what it's worth I have heard the sex link chickens you mentioned referred to as Gold Comets, Cinnamon Queens, and Red Stars. I have read posts on BYC where some say the ones I listed are all the same breed while others say they are different. Sorry - not much help!

Thank you for the welcome. I am finding the same thing in my searches...lots of contradictory answers. Not that it matters much. My kids and I are already attached to our birds. I just like to learn everything I can about things I get involved in.

Golden comets, Isa Browns, Cinnamon Queens are all gold (or red) sex-linked hybreds.

Young hens, when first laying, start off with small eggs (called pullet eggs). They increase in size over the first several weeks.

Barred leghorns I am not sure about, try doing a search with that term.

Thank you for the information. I tried searching for barred leghorns and found a few threads. From what I could glean from them, they really do exist, so I guess the farm store lady didn't lead me on. I could not find any threads that talked about their characteristics other than coloration and the fact that their eggs are white.

What I was really looking for in my birds was "pets with benefits (eggs)." The Gold Sex-Links have turned out to be pretty friendly and tolerate handling. The Barred Leghorns on the other hand have been mostly entertainment as they do not like to be handled and spook at the slightest movement in their direction. Fortunately, since I got them all at 4-5 days old, they all get along and I haven't had any pecking issues or squabbles.

I am having fun! And they are spoiled rotten, of course!
