Today I joined this site, but have lurked on it in the past, and have found this forum to be very helpful. Our family started raising chickens during the summer of 2011 with a flock of 10 orps buff hens. We added an austrolope and raised 3 silkies from chicks (all turned out ot be males!). We currently have 14 birds - 8 buffs, 1 austrolope, 1 silkie rooster, 2 americanas, and 2 welsummers. It's been a great experience for our family, especially 11-yr old son. We had great egg production this past summer and averaged about 200 eggs per month in May through June. We've had many of the usual trials and challenges - impacted oviducts, predator issues, brooding hen that we got to accept baby chicks, etc. Our chickens have several acres of pasture to free range on and are very aclimated to people and handling. Anyway, glad to be part of this "community".
