Just a quick hi to everyone. Just actually joining for ability to post, but been subscribed to the newsletter since May.
Husband and I have been raising chickens and ducks. Currently have 12 ducks, which I claim and he claims his 20 chickens.
My ducks (which are 16 weeks old) are 3 teenaged Pekins, 2 teenaged Rouens. Lost my alpha male Pekin a little over two weeks ago from our dog attacking it trying to play with it. . We believe he saved the flock by sacrificing himself. He later died that night in my arms. Currently there are 2 males (Pekins) and 3 females (1 Pekin, 2 Rouens). All which have been going through the actions of mating for the past month. Wow! Quite early from what I’ve read.
So after a few days we went to the store and I got 4 more Pekins and 3 Khaki Campbells which are a week and a half old now. Showed a Pekin duckling to my older ducks while holding it, they weren’t impressed and snapped at it. Glad I was holding it, so that it didn’t get hurt. Guess I will be waiting a long time before doing that again. Once the ducklings get a bit older, I will add them to the barn outside but separate from the older ones, but close enough to get them acclimated.
Anyways, on a side note....my newer additions are totally into the water more so than my first batch...lol. They get so excited when their water bowl is filled and start chirping and running around unable to wait for me to fill it. Too funny the characteristics of them.
I’ve added pictures of the older ducks and babies. The one picture is of the older ducks and some of the chickens checking out the new babies from inside the coop. They were so curious....lol.
