(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am brand new to chicken ownership. I have had by flock for about 6 weeks.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have 6 chickens. I think they are about 16 months old, but they could be older.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I have 2 black austrolorps, 2 golden comets, and 2 welsummers. They are absolutely the sweetest birds.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
A friend who has had chickens for about 5 years told me about the site.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love to create, especially salvage art and nature crafts. I craft, crochet, cross-stitch, mosaic, paint and DIY.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I live in Alaska with my husband, a chihuahua (who is more like a cat), and a calico kitty (who is more like a chihuahua). We have lots of family nearby, including our 4-year old grandson. Although I've lived in Alaska for 32 years, I will always be a Nebraskan at heart.

Welcome to the Backyard chickens flock, hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.
You may want to post on the "Alaska" thread. just put that in search box and it should come up for you.

Welcome!! My sister lived in AK for years and years! Now she and her husband travel (they actually drive it!) there every summer from their home in Texas. Best wishes on your chicken adventure - they definitely capture your heart! Are any of them laying yet?

Hi, Denaya! Welcome to BYC.

I'm an Alaskan, too. I got my first flock in March and had to replace a few in June. I have four 16-week Marans/EE mixes and two 4-ish month old Red Sexlink. Waiting for my first egg any day now. :)

I'm pretty sure they're all laying. I get 4-6 eggs each day!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes, new to chickens as of March this year.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have 21. 20 hens and one roo.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Oh my! I have Ameracaunas, speckled Sussex, Penedesencas, Welsummers, Barnevelders, Dixie Rainbows (not a true breed but awesome!), Brahmas, Golden Laced Wyandottes and Dominiques.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Started researching chickens and coops two years before it became a reality so found BYC on the Internet.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Again, oh my! I love hanging with family and friends, my chickens, photography, sewing, painting, drawing, gardening, cooking, bird watching, all things nature and always learning new things!

I am married, 35 years this August (and DH is my everything!). 3 Children... ages 31 (Daughter), 29 (Daughter) and 26 (Son). We have one small mutt dog (a rescue). Dog is just one of the flock and helps protect them. I really want to get a Blue Healer!

I early retired in January of this year (and loving it!) from a municipal fire department. My main career was in Information Technology. I worked as a web designer, application developer, business analyst, data analyst and project manager.

I moved from the big city to 5+ acres in a rural area. Always dreamed of living rural, having chickens, a big garden and goats. Once the kids moved out, seemed like the right time to live the dream and retire! So I have the chickens and garden....next is goats!

I also volunteer for a rural fire department. My life is busier now then when I worked full time...but I'm enjoying life more than ever (except for raising our kids) and living the dream!
