NEW to the chicken owning world

from over the border!

I have both black and red sex links and just to confuse you I much prefer the red. I find them much friendlier and generally nicer birds (although the blacks are sooo beautiful!). Just throwing my tuppence in! Have fun!

thanks for your help Jena,
Yes the Black Rock sounds like it could be the birds for our family:cool:

Can you compost the waste bedding and wood shavings from there floor?

Anyway Jena, would you mind if i PM'd you if i need any help?
Thanks for your time,

No Problem Jay C,

Sorry for the delay I was out working this evening. You can PM me and I am around most days.

I compost everything, this year I am growing my vegetable garden for the first time and all the chicken waste has made a huge difference already. I had a soil floor in my run and the girls have really cleared it and of course they poop out there too, so I turned the coup around and
then moved the run and i have just dug over the area where it was before to plant my beans and it is working out really well. When I am out there doing the garden I let the girls out to Free range with me, and they love it. They are so good at clearing the garden, you just have to be a little careful they are not under the spade when you step on it.

They think they can get into the hole before you. But they are great fun. I have not tried having very young birds, but I am sure it would be fun for children, but I live on an old housing estate, so we have lovely big gardens, but the council will not allow roosters. That is why I bought the POL pullets. It does take a while to be able to tell the sex, safer to be sure in the beginning.

I do not have young children but my neighbours do and their kids love my girls and come around to see them often.

They are fantastic creatures, and the eggs are wonderful, really you will enjoy having them around.
