I just joined today and am in the beginnings of researching chickens. We have not bought any yet but would like to soon. Looking for good egg layers and friendly chickens...what are the best? Plan on letting them out around the yard too. Any insight would be very much appreciated:)

i would suggest looking into buff orpingtons, australorps, and wyandottes. All are very pretty, good egg layers, and friendly. There are so many to chose from!! some other good ones are sex links, barred rocks, Rhode island reds, and leghorns. The last one has a tendency to be flighty, but i still really like them, and they lay a lot of eggs :) good luck!!

I'm glad you joined our community.

I would suggest Wyandottes and Easter Eggers. My Wyandottes are very friendly, personable, and inquisitive. They are also very good egg layers and extremely cold hardy. My Easter Egger has been an excellent layer as well and is also sweet. Other good breeds include Orpingtons, Australorps, and Sussex.

I am a huge fan of the Orpington breeds....Buff Orpingtons and Black Australorps. Both of these are great layers and super friendly. Plymouth Barred Rocks are super layers as well. Wyandottes and Easter Eggers are also great on the laying and friendly birds as well. Any of these are a great breed to own.

Good luck with which ever breed you choose and welcome to our flock!
