Hi Everyone!
My name is Clara, I'm living in Northern Virginia, and I'm new to chickens! Already seeing this website, I can't wait to be an invested member of the community! I'm currently building my own small coop, and hope to get around 4 laying hens. Not picky at all on breeds, just ready to experiment and see what works.
Outside of chickens, I have my extremely affectionate Golden Retriever, Libby. Check out her instagram @libertypuppy for some adorable pics!
If anyone has some sage advice that they wished they knew as beginners, let me know! I have so much to learn, and hardly know where to start.

Hi Clara, it's nice to have you here!

A couple of the things I wish I'd known ahead of time are:
1. Get your birds from a reputable hatchery or breeder to get off to a healthy start
2. Have the coop ready before you get chicks (if that's the route you're going) because those little balls of fluff grow big fast!

There are a lot of things you can learn by reading articles in the Learning Center. And there will be a lot of things you learn as you go. Don't let it overwhelm you, just take it a step at a time and enjoy!
 
Hello Clara. Welcome to BYC! There is tons of info here and very good people to help you on your journey as a new chicken owner. :)

If you want to get the most out of BYC, I suggest you do the following:
  • For general education, spend some time browsing the Articles link above and possibly the Learning Center. You will find excellent information for both newbies and long-time chicken owners there.
  • When you have specific questions, most of the time a quick search will come up with the answers.
  • If you don't find anything useful that way, post your question in an appropriate sub-forum. People here are very helpful and will answer your question even it has been asked 100 times before.
