I'm in NJ and I'm hoping to find better ways to maintain my coop for the health and happiness of my flock. For ease I just copied and pasted the question samples.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I got my first flock of 6 chicks in 2017. Unfortunately, I lost that flock to a wild animal getting in the coop a year later. I have upgraded my coop and run and now it is a little like Fort Knox.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I now have 13 hens and one roo. He is a handsome beast and is proof that not all roosters are of bad temperament. He was a rescue (someone dumped him along a local highway) and he has been a caring, gentle guardian of my girls for 3ish years now.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I have 2 barred rock, 4 Easter Eggers, 2 Australorp, 1 Sapphire Gem, 4 Isa Browns, and I think my Roo is some type of Maran.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love just about everything. They sonrelaxing to watch and a joy to have around when I'm doing yard work. They make my heart happy when they chase after me for treats and scraps. I love the look of their coop in my run and my plan this summer is to give it a fresh, upgraded look.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I'm an outdoorsy person that love being in the yard. I am trying my hand at carpentry such as building an outdoor shower and extending my deck. My goal this summer is to upgrade my deck with a canopy and new cafe lights. I also dabble in square foot gardening.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm a teacher or preschoolers with disabilities. I use my free time fussing in the yard, fostering dogs from a local rescue, and being bossed around by my own furbabies (2 dogs, 2 cats). I love to read, run, and do some road cycling.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
When I first got my flock, my sister bought the BYC book and I loved all the info in it. So here I am!
