My family just moved to 10 acres in the country from the burbs too. I went ahead and got chicks, figuring by the time they were ready to go outside, I'd have had enough time to figure out what I was doing! My kids love taking care of them and watching them grow. The babies are 5 weeks old now, and we got them as day olds.
All you need is a brooder set up and you can get chicks this weekend! i used a large rubbermaid tote with a clamp on light (triple secured and with the grill cover thing) and the feeder and waterer. I used puppy training pads on the bottom until they were a week or so old, then tried using pellets, pine shaving and rice hulls as bedding. A lid of some sort is good, because my babies started trying to fly out when they were like 2 or 3 weeks old! I used the end of a dog cage to set over the top, so they had plenty of ventilation.
