Good morning everyone! Another newbie here. My husband and I have talked for several years of raising chickens and have finally done more than talk. We built a coop out of large pallets and are in the process of finishing the enclosed run. The coop is even equipped with solar lighting inside and out. We still need to put in the roost and nesting boxes which will hopefully happen this weekend. I think my husband and son have done a wonderful job on the little chick cabin!
I grew up helping my grandmother raise chickens but that was many, many years ago so it's going to take a while to get back to where I feel comfortable dealing with them. We currently have 31 Buff Orpington chicks that are about 3 weeks old. They are an unknown mix of sex so we'll have to wait to see what we wind up with. The cockerels will be butchered when they are appropriate age. We're looking forward to both fresh meat and good farm fresh eggs!
I don't have any current pics of my flock but here are a couple when they were a few days old and adorable as well as a couple of the coop.
Looking forward to learning and interacting with all of you for years to come. Thanks!
Jean
