Hello! I am new to raising chickens. My flock is 4 weeks old... I ordered them from a mail order hatchery. They just recently began to choose the pecking order. I have 2 known roosters, ( I ordered two) so I hope the other 19 are hens. Though, I have a sneaky feeling I have two more roosters. Will have to wait and see.

I have one rooster who is beginning to pick on another hen, he seems to chase her away from feed and the other chickens. I don't have a clue as to why. But I suspect that this hen may actually be one of those other roosters.

I guess my biggest question so far would be if you end up with too many roosters, what do you do with the extra roosters?

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

If you do a lot of free ranging and have a large enough coop for all these birds, sometimes you can keep extra roosters. Depends on the personalities and your set up. But for that amount if hens, 2 roosters is enough. Most people either eat them or rehome them. Roosters can be hard to rehome because most people want hens. But you can start by chatting in your state thread to see if any of your local chicken neighbors needs another roo. Scroll thru here to find your state thread...

You can also post an ad in our Buy Sell and Trade section. You will need 20 posts before you can place an ad. You can welcome in some new members in this New Members section to get your post count up. Here is an area you can hopefully rehome your roos...

Good luck and I hope you can find some nice forever homes for your extra roos. :-)

Thank you so much for all the helpful information....

We will be free ranging them out in the garden as soon as we get a fence we can put up and take down when not free ranging...Our coop is pretty large, I have a youtube channel under GardenNovice which shows my coop....Here is the chicks last week...(3 weeks old)

Welcome to BYC! I enjoyed watching your video. The general rule of thumb is 1 rooster for every 10 hens. TwoCrows has given you some good advice on what to do with those extra roosters. Good luck with your flock.

Sometimes it's hard to get rid of roosters, especially if they are as pretty as this one. His name is Roosta Me Gusta.
