Hello! I don't have any questions, but I've been reading the forum a lot lately. I've been thinking about chickens for a few years, and reeaaally thinking about them since I bought a house last year. I took the plunge and pre-ordered my chicks last week from Meyer and will be picking them up in June. I'm in NW Ohio.

I have experience with a lot of animals, but chickens have somehow eluded me so far - I have done a lot of work in animal behavior and my chickens primarily will be pets (though I am going to encourage egg laying because mmmmm, eggs.) I'm excited to study their behavior, train them and just have a grand ol' time. I live in the city but have a bit of yard for free ranging (and understanding neighbors, luckily!) and my run is almost done, still working on the coop. They'll be allowed to free range in the yard under supervision once they're a bit older. They'll be living in the house for the first four or five weeks, so that'll be exciting! :p

I'm excited to have some people to share my chicken journey with, thanks for having me!

I recommend a visit to the Learning Centre; lots of good tips there: https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also pop in and say hello on your local thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you ‘Find your State’s thread.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flockwhen they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out

Good luck!

Greetings from Kansas, basedonfact, and welcome to BYC! It's great to have you in our community! Looks like Teila gave you some great advice and links so I will just say best wishes and thanks for joining BYC!

Some folks have had success "clicker" training chickens, and I recall a youtube.video where a chicken did an abbreviated agility course, walking not running. Chicken swings are getting more popular, some chickens have even figured out how to get them working..

Hi Teila! I was reading through the learning center, and I noticed that the section regarding city ordinances relating to backyard chickens is actually incorrect for my city - It sites the information from the general animals ordinance, but there's actually a second ordinance for my city specifically referring to backyard chickens that gives limitations not shown in the BYC database. Who do I let know or how to I suggest a change to this information? Thanks!

Howdy .. it is probably best to contact one of the Moderators to have this fixed up but as I am not sure which one would be best, I recommend posting on this Forum which the Moderators monitor:
