My husband and I built a chicken coop over the weekend as a mothers day present. I love it, but have a few questions. The coop is an 8x6x7 and I have 5 girls ( at least I hope!) Since I have many predators in my area hawks, owls, raccoons and opossums It's all fenced in and has fencing wrapped on the outside floor so I don't have to worry about unwanted diggers.
I can't let them free range in the yard I live in SE Portland OR and just have too many owls and hawks above, plus both sides of my yard only have 4 ft fencing.
What do I do about the flooring in my coop? I like the idea of the deep litter method, I am curious what other city folk do in these conditions. If i choose to do it, will they still get their pecking fix? After these pictures were taken I did add some pine shavings to part of the coop floor.
We will be finishing the coop tonight. We have to hang some nesting boxes and perches and cut off the extra hardware wire.
Here are some pictures. Constructive criticism is welcomed! I apologize for the picture size.
