Hi everyone!
I'm really looking forward to meeting other folks raising chickens and learning from y'all!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My spouse and I got our chicks about a month ago now, and it's been lots of fun so far. While my spouse grew up with chickens (and various other creatures) in a rural setting in Maine, I grew up in the St. Louis suburbs and am very much a noob.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have four.
(3) What breeds do you have?
A Rhode Island Red, an Americauna, an Easter Egger, and a "Mystic Maran" (a cross between a Black Copper Maran and a Barred Rock).
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
So far, it's just been the joy and cuteness of raising the chicks. The highlight was taking them outside for the first time - they all took a snooze in a patch of sun and took their first dust baths. It was adorable and so cool to see them figure out how to be chickens.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love to garden and have a small side business selling seedlings. I also grow gourmet mushrooms (oyster, shiitake, Lion's Mane, etc.).
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I work for a big tech company and don't like to spend my free time looking at screens. As soon as I'm off work I head outside if it's a nice day. My spouse and I own a two flat in the city of Chicago. In addition to the chicks, we also have two dogs and a cat.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found BYC during a Google search when I was trying to figure out how to sex one of the chicks. Spoiler alert - it's too soon to tell, I think. I joined because the info I saw on here seemed helpful and the people seemed nice and like they were having lots of fun.
