Glad to meet you, and welcome to BYC. When you have a specific issue you want to learn about, use the SEARCH button. The most useful results tend to be Articles, which stay focused on the topic, unlike conversations in the forum posts, which can wander all over, but are sometimes real jewels. Look at the top of the listing for the result and it will tell you if it's an article or a post.
When you find a really useful post or article you want to keep looking at again and again, you can bookmark them. The other useful thing is that most articles are reviewed. The articles are written by BYC members, and so are the reviews. It's helpful to note the review stars, and also look in the comments, because, as a newbie, I need help deciding which articles to rely on. And sometimes, the comments will add helpful details, too!
Here are a few articles and posts on diseases and being prepared:
Injuries, Diseases & Cures Library (click on links for each topic to expand)
Lists of medicines folks like to have on hand (there are many that can substitute for one another, so don't think you have to buy all of these!! A much shorter list can be made for a reasonable first aid kit)
Is it sour crop? and how to treat it
Coop ventilation (just because it's so important for health, especially in winter)
Overview: Intro to chicken keeping
There are wonderful articles on dealing with a muddy run, winterizing, and predator proofing your coop and run, if you are interested. But you can find so many things for yourself with that SEARCH button. Best wishes from your near neighbor in New England!
