New To The Group!

:welcome:welcome:welcome

Welcome to BackYard Chickens! It sounds like your hen is a rooster's favorite (and possibly over stressed by him). For a saddle, I recommend getting her one that has the shoulder pads because of how you're explaining her shoulders are. I haven't tried this one out yet, but this looks like a pretty good saddle with shoulder pads on Amazon: DOWN UNDER OUTDOORS Medium-Large Chicken Saddle with Adjustable Straps, Chicken Apron, Poultry Saver, Pet Supplies, Including Shoulder Cover (Blue) https://a.co/d/0fcGp2Hz

Hi Everyone! My name is Cat, and I am a fairly new chicken owner! Going on about 2 years now. I have 9 hens and 1 obnoxious rooster!! 🤪😂
So far, I haven't had any big issues. My flock looks great!!!
But....one of my Black Copper Marans has an issue that I haven't been able to figure out!!
She has no feathers on her back, or at least half of her back. And a raised scab at the top of both wings. At first I thought it might be lice or mites and I was treating her with diatomaceous earth. But I'm not sure now that that was the problem as her feathers are not growing back. So I have recently started giving her extra protein, to try and boost feather production, and I put a mixture of coconut oil and bag balm on her skin and the 2 scabs, trying to soothe the area. I also just ordered a chicken saddle, because it's so hot and I'm worried about her skin getting sunburned. It has been months, and I don't know why the feathers are not growing back.

Other than the missing feathers, she looks and acts perfectly healthy!!!!!

Anyone have any idea what could be wrong with her, and what to do?!

I'm excited to be in the group, and hope to learn a lot!!! 🐓❤️
Welcome to BYC! Glad to have you! Best of luck with getting your hen back to normal.

Welcome to BYC, we're glad to have you here! I agree with others, your hen's missing feathers sounds like over-mating from the rooster. They sell chicken saddles that can be put on a hen to protect her back feathers. I haven't used one personally but I hear they help.
We have never used them until a few months ago. I found out about good ones somewhere here on BYC, and got them. They are mesh so cool in the summer. We've only used one of two for one hen, and it works great! We got Small as these are silkies and that size fit well for her.

Welcome to BYC, Cat! :frow
