Hello from Western North Carolina. New to this type hobby, my son and I are doing a joint venture in raising possibly 12 to 15 chickens. We are starting out with 6 pullets, 4 New Hampshire Red's, and 2 Rhode Island Reds. Just bought them today and are getting started. Our local feed store does not carry any rooster chicks or any straight runs, so we are still waiting on that. We are excited about the days of enjoyment ahead and I look forward to sharing our venture on here.

I know tons of chicken people who would be thrilled if their feed store DIDN'T sell roosters. Usually people end up with an abundance of them and can't rehome them.

Thanks drumstick diva, I'm sure too many roosters can be a problem. I am wondering how many is too many for 14 or 15 hens? Any suggestions?

No roosters are necessary for egg production but if you are looking for fertile eggs to hatch, 1 rooster is sufficient - any more and the hens get overbred.
