hello all,

I wanted to take a second to say hello. In March we purchased 4 chickens. I have 3 teenagers, 19,16,14 and when they were little our chicks got handle a lot. I have a very large dog so it was very important if I was going to let them free rang that the chickens and the dog made friends. thank god for us our dog is a wonderful mother. she adopted the chickens as her badies. When they were scared as chick they ran to our Rott for protection. she would sit and they would huddle under her. We even have caught her cleaning them as you would a pup. At first the chick were not to into it. BUt now as they have gotten bigger seem to enjoy it. She gives them their baths and they roost on her under the shade tree enjoying their naps when it is cooler. it is a crack up to she her heard them as they walk around ensuring they all stay safe. This is 3rd year raising chickens to full size but our first time with egg layers and first time keeping them for more than just the season. They are great. I am so excited to have them.

We all enjoy watching them. They are pretty tame and will eat right out of your hand. We keep food and water out at all time, we just need to make a permant coop for the girls. Lucky our neighborhood is newer and we dont seem to have door cats. We do have hawks but with the dog outside they seem to stay away.

We have 2 Golden Comets, 2 Plymoth Rocks. Just this last week we starting getting our first eggs. we have one that seems to be laying, until today and a second started as well. So today was our first day getting 2 eggs from our girl. very exciting, right now they seem to like to lay in the cool shaded rocks of my herb garden. they lay in the same spot every day.

Once it cools down a bit going to be over 100 again tomorrow, going to work on getting them to start using the permant coop we are working on. For now they seem to like to Roost in our old rabbit hutch.

I look forward to reading more learning more and discovering the many wonders of raising chickens. Thank you for sharing what you know!

Have a wonderful day
