I'm an old chicken lady but so much still to learn. I live on Vancouver Island (previously from Alberta) We're in a very small village where we can have our chickens.
I've raised Barnvelders, Jersey Giants, Campines, Buff Orpingtons, RIR, Columbian Rocks, Barred Rocks, Buff Brahmas, Americanas from bought chicks. I'm trying to choose one or two breeds and stick with them but not totally decided yet which. Currently have 2 RIR, 2 Columbian Rock, 2 Easter Eggers, two Silver Laced Wyandotte, one Red hybrid layer, and another big Red hybrid I don't recall the name of.
I got new incubator and hatched a neighbors barnyard mix with a Black Copper Maran rooster and got 1 out of 24....rest of eggs were non starters so I blame the Roo. The chick came out white with just a few dark feathers at wing tip so don't know what she is...Because she was an only a scrambled to get her some mates and found 2 Light Brahma chicks and on Buff Orpington at the local Peavey Mart. Tried to sex with wing feathers but not sure what I'm doing. Three seem like they have two rows of feathers at end of wing and the biggest Brahma has a single row. When looking at sexing tapes the hens had two rows but one set was shorter than other and these seem same length at 6-7 days. Wish I knew what I was doing but I guess I'll have to be surprised.
