Hello,

Charlie from Cherokee County GA here.
Thinking of starting to raise these fluffy little egg machines....

Have been looking on our Counties site trying to determine whether or not the
backyard chicken laws have changed for Cherokee Co Georgia, and either they haven't
or they have, and Cherokee Co has hidden the news on their website so good, I can't
find the land use, or whatever it's called ordinance.

If anyone is in Cherokee Count GA, and knows, I'd love to hear the good news.
(And find the website that shows it is not allowed/legal)

When I moved here in 1997, they said a Chicken and a Cow or Horse were all equal,
and you needed 2 acres per live stock. (ie: 5 chickens, you need 10 acres). Kinda ridiculous.

Looking forward to raising them if I am allowed.

Charlie

Welcome to BYC. You could call your county extension office...they might know, or the county commissioner in your district. I hope it's a 'go' for you, good luck.

If we have restrictions here, I don't know about it. Used to have a neighbor who had way too many animals for the space, who were not well taken care of. It was bad, animals like goats in the house all the time, and the house was not cleaned at all (nor did the septic system work.) I know they used animal cruelty and health laws to deal with them; I don't believe there was an "animal per acre" type law they could use. Yes, county extension should know.

There's a state law that before you sell eggs you have to get "certified," or some such term. As I understand it, it's no big deal, a booklet, a quick test and maybe $20. Trouble is, it is hardly ever offered; they say they have no funds to administer it. County ext. will know about this, too, I'll bet.
