Hello All,

I finally decided to get chickens, so I am in the research phase of my new adventure. I live on 120 acres in southern Alabama. I have horses, dogs and cats but have never had chickens before. I used to work at Tractor Supply, so I know a bit about some breeds and all kinds of chicken supplies. I'm here to get feedback and advice from others about starting out with chickens. I will be getting two grown hens (Buffs) and possibly a rooster (RIR) from a friend at work. The jury's still out on the rooster though!

So, hello! I'm looking forward to meeting some new chicken friends!

Hi Robyn and

- glad that you have joined us.

I think if I have even 10% of the land you have I'd have a mental meltdown deciding how many chickens I'd have

Just my opinion, but if you don't want to breed chickens, a roo can be more of a pain than they are worth - on a farm however it may be different.

The Learning Centre is a great resource, even for experienced chicken keepers - loads of info on anything chicken. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Joining your state thread will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area, which can be helpful (just type the name of your state in the search box).

All the best
