Hi my hen is 9 months old and I've had her since a chic the last couple of days she's stopped eating and started to pull her feathers out - she now looks like a porcupine on her neck !! Does anyone no why she would just start doing this - she has stopped laying too the icy ure is from Friday she is worse then this today x

I think your hen may have mites. A mite infestation can cause feather loss, usually on the back, because the chicken will usually over preen and pull out her feathers in an effort to get relief. Mite (and other pests) infestations can also cause a drop in egg production. If you haven't treated them for mites yet, now would be a good time. Sevin or Permethrin are both good treatments. Hello and Welcome to BYC! Hope you figure out what is wrong with your girl. Mites or lice can make them pretty miserable, she is young to be doing much of a molt but those do look a lot like pin feathers. You might want to take more pictures and post over on the Emergencies / Diseases / Injuries and Cures board.

Hi guys I just wanted to say Thankyou for all your comments My girl is looking sooo much better and I think I was just a molt as all her spikey bits are now full feather again
