We received our first chicks not quite a week ago. A friend had gotten 9 of them and gave us 3 of them. Buff Orpingtons. Husband and friend went to place on Saturday to purchase feed and bedding...and brought home 3 Rhode Island Reds. Well, my sister complained that I'd never named all of my kids after her, and now I wasn't naming a chick after her. SO we went back to Jax and bought 2 bantams and named them after my sister. THEN she complains that we'll be eating them. Well, no....bantams are laying chicks...too little to ever eat! Geez! Sometimes you just can't make family happy.
So the Orps are 4 weeks old, and the RIRs and bantms are just over a week old.
We live in northern Colorado and just recently moved to a rental home that has a bit of property around it. It's a terrific old farmhouse with wonky floors that we love and the landlord has told us to do what we want! It's in pretty good shape, just need to replace some windows and get some window AC units...it'll get hot in the bedrooms!
I'm a mom of 5, 26 down to 12. Son, 26...Army Sgt., Son 24, graduates from CO State on Saturday, daughter, 21, newly married, living and going to school in Berea, KY and youngest is 12 and finishing 6th grade at a charter school. Husband is a custom cabinetmaker. I work part time scheduling for a mobile pet groomer and the rest of the time at home...trying not to spend all my time playing on the internet.
We have 3 dogs, male red Australian cattle dog (Caleb), female blue cattle dog (Scout), and a male Shih tzu (Duncan). Apparently, Shih tzu means "I love chickens" in Chinese...we think. It could mean 'chicken herder' for all we know. Caleb is really of no consequence as he is going to live with our married daughter in KY next weekend, but he should be introduced at least. Scout is pretty good with the chicks so far. Duncan likes to run circles around their outside pen and bark....working on him with that.
So.....that is us.
