Hi
I'm located in a subtropical region in Australia. About a month ago I moved into a new home and after a life of being a city mouse have inherited from the previous owner 4 chooks (2 x white leghorn something hens, a brown speckled hen and a red speckled hen) and 2 muscovy ducks (a duck and a drake).
Just before Easter I picked up a new chook shed and ended up taking what I think are two 22 week old pekins (who are currently behaving like teenagers). They have all been living together in a pretty manky little pen so I'm in the process of building separate pens/coops for them. If I never dig another pole hole again it wil be too soon...
I feed them organic layer, fresh fruit and vegies and have let them free range while I'm at work. They've got about 1/4 acre of gardens and woodlands to forage and they're locked in their pen overnight. Plus they have a kids hard plastic wading pool to bathe/play in through the day which they seem to love.
They seem pretty happy and are giving us eggs every day. The muscy just started laying and from what I've read the pekins should start laying in the next month or so.
I'm really happy that this forum is available as I have been reading it for the 4-6 weeks trying to get my head around looking after these beautiful fluff balls
